Every day from waking up in the morning to working in the office, we carry formaldehyde with us, from one room where it is constantly released to another room. If you are a bus, you are lucky, because the formaldehyde emission from the interior of a private car is higher than that of the interior.
Formaldehyde is also a volatile organic compound, but formaldehyde is easily soluble in water, which is different from other volatile organic compounds. It has a wide range of indoor sources and a high release concentration. Therefore, formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds are often described separately. Formaldehyde (chemical formula HCHO, molecular weight: 30.03, is a colorless gas with a strong pungent odor. It is easily soluble in water and alcohol ethers. It is gaseous at room temperature, and usually occurs in aqueous and gaseous forms.
Acute formaldehyde poisoning is a systemic disease mainly caused by eye and respiratory system damage caused by exposure to high concentrations of formaldehyde vapor.
Formaldehyde is everywhere, it exists in many places, in addition to paint and glue, it is also inseparable from decorative materials and furniture. Especially wood-based panels, wood-based panels mainly use urea-formaldehyde resin as its adhesive. Urea-formaldehyde resin is an amino resin adhesive made of urea and formaldehyde. It will slowly release formaldehyde for decades. Moreover, under the conditions of high temperature and high humidity, the urea-formaldehyde resin will accelerate the hydrolysis, the amount of formaldehyde released will increase, and the environment will be polluted.
Relative Concentration Risk
When the formaldehyde concentration is 0.06-0.07mg/m³, children will have mild asthma;
When it reaches 0.1mg/m³, there will be peculiar smell and discomfort;
At 0.5mg/m³, it can irritate the eyes and cause tearing;
0.6mg/m³, can cause throat discomfort or pain;
When the concentration is higher, it can cause nausea and vomiting, cough, chest tightness, asthma and even pulmonary edema;
When formaldehyde reaches 30mg/m³, it will immediately cause death.
