Once pollutants enter the atmosphere, they will be diluted and spread. The greater the wind, the stronger the atmospheric turbulence, the more unstable the atmosphere, the faster the dilution and diffusion of pollutants; on the contrary, the slower the dilution and diffusion of pollutants. In the latter case, especially when an inversion layer occurs, pollutants can often accumulate to very high concentrations, causing serious air pollution incidents. Although precipitation can purify the atmosphere, because pollutants fall with rain and snow, air pollution will turn into water pollution and soil pollution.

Areas with complex topography or ground conditions will form local thermal circulation, such as mountain valley winds, sea and land winds in coastal areas, and urban heat island effects, which will affect the air pollution status of the area.

When the flue gas is running, it encounters high hills and mountains, and sinks on the windward side, causing pollution in nearby areas. If the smoke passes over the hills, vortexes appear on the leeward side, and pollutants accumulate, which will also cause serious pollution. In mountain valleys and basin areas, smoke is not easy to diffuse, and it often whirls on valleys and slopes. Especially on the leeward slope, the airflow moves in a spiral, the pollutants tend to accumulate, and the concentration is higher. At night, because the valley floor is calm, cold air sinks, warm air rises, and temperature inversion is prone to occur. The entire valley is covered by the temperature inversion layer, and the entire valley is covered with smoke and clouds, which lasts for a long time, and it is easy to form serious pollution.

In cities located on the coast and along the lake, the smoke flows along with the sea and lake breeze during the day, and it is easy to form a "pollution zone" on the land.

Early air pollution generally occurred in local areas such as cities and industrial areas. In a relatively short period of time, the concentration of pollutants in the atmosphere increased significantly, causing harm to people, animals, and plants. Since the 1960s, some countries have adopted control measures to reduce pollutant emissions or use high chimneys to diffuse pollutants, which has reduced air pollution.

Although high chimney emissions can reduce the concentration of pollutants near the ground, they spread the pollutants to a larger area, causing air pollution in a large area far away from the pollution source. Radioactive fallout from atmospheric nuclear tests and volcanic ash from volcanic eruptions can be widely distributed in the atmosphere, causing global atmospheric pollution.

The so-called air pollution means that the normal atmosphere mainly contains nitrogen (78%) which is good for plant growth, oxygen (21%) required by humans and animals, and also contains a small amount of carbon dioxide <0.03%> and other gases. When gases or substances that are not part of the atmosphere, such as sulfides, nitrogen oxides, dust, organic matter, etc., enter the atmosphere, air pollution occurs. Air pollution is mainly caused by human activities. The main sources of air pollution are: factory emissions, automobile exhaust, land reclamation, forest fires, cooking smoke (including roadside barbecues), dust (including construction sites), etc.

Air pollutants are mainly divided into harmful gases (carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, photochemical smog, halogen elements, etc.) and particulate matter (dust and acid mist, aerosols, etc.). Their main sources are factory emissions, automobile exhaust, land reclamation, forest fires, cooking smoke (including roadside barbecues), dust (including construction sites), etc.
