Common misunderstandings of HEPA filtering
Misunderstanding 1: The larger the volume of particles, the easier it is to be removed by HEPA?
Analysis: The purification principle of HEPA filter is not simply to filter out particles larger than the mesh like a sieve for purification. Instead, the adsorption is formed by the van der Waals force between the fine particles and the filter, which has a good filtration efficiency for particles above 0.5 μm and below 0.1 μm.
The particles below 0.1μm do Brownian motion. The smaller the particle, the stronger the Brownian motion. The more impacts, the better the adsorption effect.
When particles above 0.5μm do inertial motion, the greater the mass, the greater the inertia, and the better the filtering effect.
In contrast, particles with a diameter of 0.1-0.3 μm become a difficulty in removing HEPA. This is why the industry uses a filtration rate of 0.3μm particles to define the HEPA filter class.
Misunderstanding 2: The purification efficiency of HEPA on 0.3μm particles can reach more than 99.97, so the purification effect of HEPA on 0.1μm particles is uncertain.
Analysis: Like Misunderstanding 1, PM0.3 is easily protected by HEPA filters because it is not easily affected by van der Waals forces. So a filter with 99.97 effect on PM0.3 may have a good effect on PM0.1, even 99.99.
Misunderstanding 3: The higher the HEPA filtration efficiency, the better?
Analysis: The higher the HEPA filtration efficiency, the greater the resistance, and the actual ventilation will decrease. When the air volume decreases, the number of purification per unit time will also decrease, and the purification efficiency will also decrease.
Therefore, the new model can only be realized if the fan, filter and air circulation design are properly matched.
The more layers of filters in the air purifier, the better?
Different air purifiers, manufacturers will be equipped with different filters according to the purpose of purification, combined with the situation of the wind system. Some are equipped with three floors, some are equipped with five floors, and some are equipped with more.
How many filters are needed for the air purifier depends mainly on the purpose of purification, especially the matching of air volume. The quality of the filter does not have nothing to do with the number of layers, it is mainly related to the thickness and the matching of the air volume. In order to increase the air volume and reduce the density of the filter, some low-end air purifiers increase the number of layers to increase the selling point, but in fact, the filter of each layer is very thin, and the filter does not match the air volume. Large particles can easily penetrate the hepa filter and make it ineffective when the air volume is large.
The filter screen is used to filter fine particles. It has nothing to do with the number of layers, density, and technology, but the density is too high, and it can’t be passed through. The pleated filter screen is good and the area is large, which is good for filtering the air better.
